They just eliminated the drop shadows from the old logo. I agree the new sidebar is something only a few of use will use. It give's you more flexible options on whatever kind of photo you want to do a search with. Say you're looking for only red photos that will match your search query. Click on the little red box and all the photos that match your search will be red. Much useful for the graphic designer. Anyhow, I do agree with you that the new logo needs some work.
